Hippies: Looking more like a Northern California commune than a bicycle company. Specialized started life by importing components from Italy. Mike Sinyard (center) embraced mountain biking and transformed the sport of bicycling. Brian Maloney (left of Mike) later owned San Diego´s best bicycle shop, Adam´s Avenue Cyclery.

Hard sell: It seems like a totally brilliant idea in hindsight, but back in 1981, mountain biking was a hard sell. Small groups of dedicated riders were scattered around the country. The Stumpjumper gave the growing sport a focus point.
